The United States International Trade Commission has requested public input alongside its investigation into the probable economic effect of providing duty-free treatment to currently dutiable imports from Canada and Mexico.

The invitation from USITC comes as part of the consultation into the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The US Trade Representative, Robert Lighthizer, has asked USITC to report on the effects of extending duty-free treatment.

USITC have been asked to consider the outcome of eliminating tariffs for Mexican and Canadian exports of each article in chapters 1 through 97 of the Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the US. It is tasked with considering the effects on both US industries and consumers.

Although the report will be confidential, USITC will hold a public hearing on June 20 and take written submissions by June 26. The report is to be finalized by August 16, the earliest date that the statutory consultation period will close.
