Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez ended a four-day visit to China by restating Spain’s intention to seek a solution to avoid a trade conflict over electric vehicles (EVs) as well as other issues. Sanz said during a news conference in Kunshan, Jiangsu province, that Spain is constructively moving forward to mediate between China and the European Commission.

“We have said very clearly that we don’t want a trade war since it benefits no one,” Sanchez told reporters, underlining Spain’s intent to “build bridges” and seek negotiated solutions amid the current tensions.

Sanchez reiterated Spain’s support for open trade between Europe and China, advocating for resolutions that adhere to the multilateral norms set by the World Trade Organization and address legitimate concerns on both sides.

While on his visit, Sanchez got a first-hand view of the Chinese technology for EVs. He went on to say, “Chinese EVs are really cutting-edge. I believe major European companies have much to learn from the innovations and advancements made by the Chinese companies in the electrical vehicle sector.”

Inducing Chinese Investment in Spain was one of the major intents of Sanchez’ visit. Sanchez wanted to create a value chain in the country.

His second visit to China within a span of less than two years rekindled commitment from both countries to maintain high-level dialogue and augment their partnership. Sanchez said, “This visit brought us closer to a critical partner, opening up avenues for advanced cooperation in mutual interest.”.

Eight agreements in trade, investment, culture, education, science, and green development are signed following this visit between Spain and China. Sanchez said this spirit is not only bilateral but extends as far as the European Union.

The Spanish economic delegation, led by Economy Minister Nadia Calviño, laid great emphasis on economic relations. Sanchez met Spanish companies operating in China and told the gathering that Spain wants to boost trade and investment, especially in innovative and eco-friendly sectors. Among the deals signed is one with Chinese green technology firm Envision Group: An investment close to €1 billion ($1.1 billion) will be made to build a zero-carbon hydrogen industrial park in Spain, creating nearly 1,000 jobs.

Sanctioning Spain and the EU’s trade deficit with China, Sanchez still announced plans to set up a permanent mechanism for ongoing cooperation and dialogue on trade and investment issues.

The two sides agreed on cooperation in the sphere of cultural, educational, and scientific ties, acknowledging the potent legacy and great prospects of development of both nations. Sanchez said that Spain views China as an important partner for confrontation with those global challenges which include climate change and also development financing.

China and the EU play key roles in addressing these global issues,” Sanchez said. “While differences may arise, the common ground between us is far more significant. Therefore, continued cooperation is essential.”
