BANGKOK, May 1 (TNA) -- The US government has rescinded the anti-dumping duties which it imposed on Thai canned pineapple over 12 years ago, according to Thailand's  Deputy Commerce Minister Wiroon Techapaiboon.

The annulment of the anti-dumping duties on Thai canned pineapple will be retroactive six months to last October 31, Mr. Wiroon said, noting that Washington's decision would boost the competitiveness of Thai canned pineapple in the US market.

Despite the stiff ruling imposed since July 18, 1995, Thailand last year exported canned pineapple worth about Bt3.6 billion to the US, enabling the kingdom to become the number one exporter after capturing more than 36 per cent of the total market share in that country, he said.

There are signs that exports of Thai canned pineapple to the US will continue to grow, he said.

Washington's decision to scrap the duties on Thai canned pineapple came after Maui Pineapple Co., Ltd., an American competitor, stopped its operations and the Thai government urged the US to consider lifting the duties, Mr. Wiroon added.
