(India) IJMA calls for ban on duty-free jute imports

The jute manufacturing sector which had embarked on a strike on December 13 is now in for a fresh round of shock. The flow of jute products from Bangladesh is on a rise in recent days, as no duty is levied on imports of jute goods from Bangladesh.
The Indian Jute Mills Association (IJMA), which is the apex body of the jute industry, has called for a ban on import of duty-free jute goods from Bangladesh, by saying that the sector would lose its competitive edge.
In a letter sent to the Union Textiles Ministry, IJMA has demanded scrapping of the duty-free provision and in addition has requested imposition of anti-dumping duty on jute goods imported from Bangladesh.
IJMA has alleged that Bangladeshi jute manufacturers were taking advantage of the prolonged strike in the jute sector in India and were dumping jute products in to the country and demanded qualitative and quantitative restrictions.
Recently the Bangladeshi government had banned exports of raw jute and a few months back announced measures to bail out the ailing jute industry, which included 10 percent cash subsidy on exports and introduced mandatory packaging of commodities in jute bags.
