The formal ratification of the agreement by member states has closed the final legislative hurdle on the EU side, after the European Parliament (EP) decided to approve the document on June 16th.
On June 25, European Union (EU) member states gave final approval to the 2025 tariff agreement reached with the United States , allowing it to take effect before the July 4 deadline set by President Donald Trump.
In its statement, the EU stressed that the adoption of the agreement affirms the bloc's commitment to "a stable, predictable and mutually beneficial transatlantic trade relationship," while maintaining the necessary safeguards to protect European economic interests.
The formal ratification of the agreement by member states has closed the final legislative hurdle on the EU side, after the European Parliament (EP) decided to approve the document on June 16th.
According to an agreement reached between the two sides last July, the tariff applied to most EU goods is set at 15%, while Brussels committed to a 0% tariff on US industrial goods.
However, the EU has not yet fulfilled its obligations under the agreement. This process has been stalled for months as US President Donald Trump threatened to take control of Greenland and the US Supreme Court ruled against the tariffs he imposed.
EU lawmakers have added several safeguards, including a clause that terminates at the end of 2029 if not renewed, and a provision empowering the European Commission (EC) to suspend the agreement if the US fails to fulfill its commitments or disrupts trade and investment.
The two implementing documents on the EU side – including the elimination of tariffs on US industrial goods and the granting of preferential access to certain agricultural and seafood products – will officially come into effect one day after being published in the bloc's official gazette.
