EU launches new dumping probe into China steel

BRUSSELS, May 8 (Reuters) - The European Commission launched a new anti-dumping probe into imports of steel from China on 8/5/2008, broadening the scope of what could become a fresh trade dispute with the Asian export powerhouse.

European Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson has expressed frustration at
Chinese steel exports to the EU doubled in 2007 to about 10 million tonnes from record levels in 2006, according to estimates from the European steel sector.
Some EU industries, such as its engineering firms which buy a lot of steel, are also opposed to the prospect of Chinese steel being hit with punitive EU import tariffs.
A move to impose duties would have to be approved by the EU's member states, about half of which are usually reluctant to take measures to slow imports.
he complaints against Chinese steel imports were filed with the Commission by the European Confederation of Iron and Steel Industries whose members include companies such as ArcelorMittal (ISPA.AS: Quote, Profile, Research) (MTP.PA: Quote, Profile, Research) and Corus (CORS.O: Quote, Profile, Research).
