The Colombian steel industry asked the Colombian government to curb unfair competition from Mexico, Brazil and Venezuela, which according to Colombian sources, are selling the product below market prices, thus pushing local sales down, local newspapers reported.

Andrés Flores, the lawyer of the Colombian steelmaker industry told newspaper La República that this situation has led steel producers to request the Colombian Ministry of Trade to enforce anti-dumping measures against Mexico and Brazil.

This week, the steel industry will request the Ministry of Trade the application of anti-dumping measures against Venezuela, Efe reported.

According to industry data published by newspaper La República, in the second half of 2007, domestic steel sales fluctuated between 60,000 and 70,000 tons per year.

Amidst unfair competition, sales dropped to 30,000 tons in the second half of 2008.
