China to levy duties on US chicken

BEIJING, Sept. 1 (Xinhuanet) -- China's Ministry of Commerce has reached its final decision on charging countervailing duties, on white-feathered broiler chicken from America.
The ministry said the US government's subsidies on the product had caused substantial damages to China's broiler industry. Importers of the product will have to pay countervailing duties based on the subsidy rates of four to 30.3 percent of import prices.
The ruling went into effect Monday, and will remain valid for five years. China had imposed preliminary tariffs of 3.8 to 31.4 percent in April. The US accounts for more than 70 percent of China's broiler chicken imports.
