Australia: Union plans anti-dumping campaign
26/01/2011 12:00
Farmers concerned about cheap food imports have a new powerful ally, in the form of the Australian Workers Union.
The AWU will launch a campaign in coming weeks against trade dumping, which it says hurts Australian companies and jobs.
It comes as Federal Trade Minister Craig Emerson pushes for trade liberalisation during a trip to India.
But AWU national secretary Paul Howes says strong anti-dumping rules help free trade.
"The government, if they do believe in free trade, should be supportive of a strong anti-dumping machanism to ensure that free trade principles, as governed by the WTO (World Trade Organisation), are complied with."
