AD lawsuits against Vietnamese firms increase

Thanhnien News reported that thenumber of antidumping lawsuits against Vietnamese producers has increased to analarming level as many countries try to shield their own industries amid theeconomic crisis.

 

Mr Nguyen Duc Thanh deputy headof Competition Administration Department at Ministry of Industry & Tradesaid that "Not only large export earners such as seafood and footwear butalso products whose shipments earn only hundreds of thousands of dollars are atrisk of antidumping lawsuits, since the trend of trade protection isrising."

 

Mr Thanh said that whereas the US and the EU had initiated most of the antidumping lawsuits against Vietnampreviously, now the plaintiffs include developing nations such as India, Peruand Egypt.

 

The EU has been the mostlitigious in this respect with 10 lawsuits, followed by the US with five and India with four. Two more antidumping lawsuits were brought against Vietnamin the first quarter of this year, one by Canadaagainst waterproof footwear and the other by the US against plastic bags.

 

Mr Dinh Huy Tam general secretaryof the Vietnam Steel Association suggested the government force state fundedprojects to use locally produced steel and thereby help the country's steelmakers clear their stockpiles.

 

He said that "The governmentshould also adopt defensive measures allowed by international law to protectlocal steel production if steel imports continue to increase sharply."
