From June 1st, China will apply quarantine regulations to fresh jackfruit from Viet Nam, requiring approved growing areas and packaging facilities, application of GAP and IPM standards, and strict pest control.
The Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) stated that on December 19, 2025, the General Administration of Customs of China issued a notice stipulating phytosanitary requirements for fresh jackfruit imported from Viet Nam, based on Chinese law and the bilateral protocol with the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment of Viet Nam. The official notice took effect on June 1st.
Under this regulation, fresh jackfruit from Viet Nam can only be imported from growing areas and packing facilities that have been registered and approved by China. These growing areas must apply Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), maintain hygienic conditions in the orchards, regularly collect fallen and rotten fruit, and implement integrated pest management (IPM). They must also strictly control nine quarantine pests, including fruit flies and mealybugs.
Exported products must be cleaned, packaged in new containers, fully labeled, and accompanied by a valid phytosanitary certificate. At the border, shipments will undergo strict inspection; those that do not meet the requirements may be refused entry or destroyed.
Currently, Viet Nam's jackfruit cultivation area is approximately 84,000 hectares. Of this, about 56,000 hectares are currently producing fruit, with an annual output of 1 million tons. According to data from the Import-Export Department, in the first 11 months of 2025, jackfruit export revenue reached approximately US$177.5 million (equivalent to over VND 4,662 billion), a decrease of 24% compared to the same period last year.
Authorities assess that 2025 marks a new stage of development for Viet Nam's fruit and vegetable industry, with expanded exports, sustained high growth, and a more diversified product structure. However, dependence on a few key products and markets, especially durian and the Chinese market, necessitates product and market diversification and quality improvement.
The expansion of official exports of jackfruit, rambutan, and watermelon to China demonstrates the improving capacity of Vietnamese agricultural products to meet technical requirements, creating room for growth this year.
