Vietnam recorded a shrimp yield of over 1.264 million metric tons in 2024, up 5.3 percent year on year, while exporting over US$4 billion worth of shrimp, a significant increase from the previous year, according to the Vietnam Fisheries Society.

In 2023, the nation’s shrimp export value reached $3.38 billion, down 21.7 percent year on year. 

The 2024 export growth was attributed to the widespread application of advanced scientific techniques and hi-tech models in shrimp farming. 

However, Nguyen Viet Thang, chairman of the Vietnam Fisheries Society, pointed out that the rapid expansion of these farming models had unintentionally piled pressure on the shrimp’s natural habitat, leading to declining water quality in farming areas.

As the global market’s demands become stricter, solutions for sustainable and efficient shrimp farming remain crucial. 

As such, the fisheries sector is shifting to eco-friendly practices that align with the government’s green development policies and the agricultural sector’s commitment to promoting a green economy, Thang said.

Meanwhile, Dr. Nguyen Duy Hoa, global technical director for Empyreal & Motiv at Cargill, emphasized that one of the major challenges facing the animal feed and aquaculture industries is the growing demand for production amid a declining supply of fishmeal. 

Besides, the need for sustainable feed sources to protect the environment and marine biodiversity is increasing.

In the shrimp farming sector, disease management has become a pressing challenge, requiring feed ingredients that contribute to sustainable disease control.

The sixth Vietshrimp Aquaculture International Fair (VietShrimp 2025) opened in Can Tho City, southern Vietnam on Wednesday, centering on the theme ‘Greening Farming.’

The fair, with over 200 booths from 150 local and international firms, runs until Friday.
