Vietnam leather shoes suffer, India gains benefits

Indian Ministry of Industry and Commerce is preparing an action plan for the leather and footwear sector to take advantage of EU’s decision on imposing anti-dumping tax on Vietnam and China leather footwear.
According to Mr Jairam Ramesh, Secretary of Indian Industry and Commerce, EU’s decision on imposing anti dumping tax of 16,5% and 10% on China and Vietnam shoes products respectively has given leather and footwear sector of this country advantages to increase market share on international market.
Last week, Mr J. Ramesh also met with domestic shoe exporters to discuss strategies to enhance their shoes exports.
In 2005-2006, leather and footwear products export accounted for 2.56% of export turnover with earning of US$2,6 billion, an increase of US$2,4 billion over last period. Particularly, a shoes export has gained US$1 billion turnover, an increase of US$ 900 million over the period 2004-2005.
