September shrimp exports rise sharply despite COVID-19

The export revenue of Vietnamese shrimp reached nearly US$385 million in September, a sharp increase of 25% over the same month in 2019 and also the highest rise since March this year.

In the January-September period, shrimp export revenue was posted at US$2.7 billion, up 10.5% over the same period last year.

Aside from January, shrimp exports maintained a positive growth rate from February to September this year.

Notably, Vietnamese shrimp exports to the EU in September 2020 soared by 35.4%, the highest growth rate since early this year thanks to the positive effects of theEU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA).

The US is the leading importer of Vietnamese shrimp, accounting for nearly 24%. Vietnam’s export revenue of shrimp to the US market reached US$634.4 million in nine months, up 33% over the same period last year.

After the declines in previous months, Vietnamese shrimp exports to the EU began to expand in the third quarter of 2020 due to the coming into effect of the EVFTA in early August. The export revenue of shrimp to this market was reported at US$371 million in nine months, up 2.3% over the corresponding period in 2019. Vietnamese shrimp exports to this market are forecast to continue to rise by the end of this year.

With positive signs regarding shrimp exports in the first nine months of this year, Vietnam expects to gain total shrimp export revenue of US$3.7 billion in 2020, up 9.8% compared to 2019.
