Malaysia has launched an antidumping investigation into steel concrete reinforcing bar imports from Singapore and Turkey, the Ministry of International Trade and Industry said on April 29.
The probe resulted from a petition to the ministry from the Malaysia Steel Association, which “alleged that imports of rebar originating in, or exported from, the Republic of Singapore and Republic of Turkey are being dumped into Malaysia at a price much lower than their domestic price,” the ministry said in a statement.
A preliminary determination will be made within 120 days of the investigation’s launch date, which was April 26, the ministry said.
The antidumping move is seen as significant as Malaysia’s domestic steel consumption is largely driven by long steel products, and totaled 5.35 million mt or about 57% of the country’s total steel consumption in 2017, data from the Malaysian Iron and Steel Industry Federation showed.
About 67% of Malaysia’s long steel demand is met by local production and the balance 33% by imports, MISIF said.
