Durian exports are expected to surge in early 2026: Spectacular triple-digit growth

In the very first month of 2026, Viet Nam's durian exports recorded a breakthrough growth rate, continuing to maintain its leading position in the country's fruit and vegetable industry.
According to preliminary statistics from the Viet Nam Customs Department, in January 2026, the export value of all types of durian reached over US$117.22 million, a spectacular growth of approximately 275% compared to the same period in 2025. This strong breakthrough helped durian account for more than 18% of the total export value of fruits and vegetables in January, continuing to be the biggest highlight of the entire industry.
The Import-Export Department ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ) predicts that if customs clearance at northern border gates continues to be favorable, durian exports in the first quarter of 2026 could soon reach the $1 billion mark.
The triple-digit growth in durian production is driven by several converging factors. Firstly, Viet Nam is effectively leveraging its off-season durian crop (lasting from November of the previous year to March of the following year). During January, direct competitors such as Thailand and Malaysia have not yet entered their main harvest season, creating a unique advantage for Vietnamese durian in the international market.
Secondly, facilitating the flow of goods into the Chinese market is becoming increasingly easier thanks to the Protocol allowing Viet Nam to export frozen durian to China. In addition, as of January 2026, the number of durian packing facilities and planting area codes approved by China has doubled compared to the same period last year.
However, alongside the joy of "hitting the jackpot," this industry is also facing a major challenge regarding sustainable development in order to achieve the export target of 4-4.5 billion USD in 2026.
To ensure sustained growth, businesses need to pay special attention to strictly adhering to phytosanitary and pesticide residue regulations, which are prerequisites in both the Chinese and EU markets. Furthermore, by the end of 2025, the total durian cultivation area nationwide has exceeded 150,000 hectares, double the initial plan. Therefore, the entire industry needs to accelerate the restructuring process towards standardizing raw material areas and linking production chains.
