Brazil has imposed anti-dumping tariffs on imports of polycarbonate resins from Thailand.
A levy of US$2,550.40/t will be charged on imports from the company Bayer Thai. Imports from other producers in Thailand will be subject to a tariff of US$3,450.13/t.
The anti-dumping tariffs will apply for a five-year period.
The decision follows an investigation launched by the trade ministry in December 2011, which found evidence of dumping that was damaging Brazilian producers of the resins.
The ministry said that sale volumes in Brazil by local producers had fallen by 24.7% from 2007 to 2011 while total sales by local producers fell 46.8% and production fell by 22.7%.
Imports from Thailand increased by 118% in the period; Brazilian producers lost 12.7 percentage points of domestic market share.
The investigation was started following a complaint by Brazilian producer Unigel, whose market share in Brazil fell from 36.5% to 28.6% from 2007 to 2011.
The investigation found no evidence of dumping from South Korean producers.
In 2008, Brazil imposed anti-dumping tariffs on imports of polycarbonate resins from the European Union and the US.
Polycarbonate resins are used in appliances in a range of sectors, including automotive headlamp lenses, CDs and DVDs, medical devices and optical lenses.
