China tightens control over food safety

Chinese government is putting many efforts in improving the mechanism to examine the food safety and enhancing international cooperation in this field to reduce the number of food poisoning cases which are popular recently.

In July 23rd, citing the saying of Mr. Ly Truong Giang, director of China’s General Administration for Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, Vietnam News Agency’s correspondent in Beijing said that China has built a comprehensive supervision and inspection system to make sure that the number of food which meets the quality requirements consumed inside the country and exported increases continuously. According to Mr. Ly Truong Giang, before being exported, food products must pass not only quality inspection done by the company itself but they also have to experience the quality supervision, Inspection and Quarantine procedures done by specialized bodies. Chinese government also apply the mechanism in which allow the specialized officials to take unexpected inspections and blockade products that cannot meet the requirements on environment and sanitation security. Specialized bodies also have regular inspection on companies and make public all the results to everyone.

These above mentioned efforts help raise the rate of made-in-China food product which can meet the requirement of quality. A recent research by the China’s General Administration for Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine showed that this rate in some important products relating directly to people’s lives such as rice, wheat flour, cooking oil…has reached 91.5% and 99.8% in food exports to the EU and Japan.

Mr. Ly Truong Giang said almost all the problems in food safety in China are due to small-sized enterprises which only have out-of-date technologies. He claimed that food security has become an international problem, thus China has gone hand in hand with many countries in the world to build bilateral and multilateral cooperation mechanism in this field. Next month, China and the US will hold a meeting for deputy ministers discussing the food safety issue. There both parties will discuss about the possibility of a Memorandum on bilateral cooperation mechanism in this field.
