US to slap new anti-dumping tariffs on Chinese aluminium products

The US will apply a final round of anti-dumping levies on aluminium sheet products imported from China of up to 176.2%, the Commerce Department said on Wednesday.

The measures come in response to official complaints lodged by a group of leading US aluminium firms in 2017, who reported a surge in “low-priced, unfairly traded imports of common alloy sheet from China,” reports Reuters.

Imports of aluminium sheet products rose nearly eight-fold over the last decade, and more than 91% between 2014 and 2017, according to the companies, meaning “significant market share gains by Chinese imports at the direct expense of the US.”

“We will continue to do everything in our power under US law to restrict the flow of dumped or subsidised goods into US markets,” said Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross.

The final tariffs are marked down from previous proposals of up to 280.46%.
