Taiwan stops importing Chinese shrimps

On September 1st, 2007 Taiwan stopped importing frozen shrimps from China after detecting that there was an antibiotic residue which can cause cancer in shrimp consignments. Department of Health of Taiwan ordered to return these consignments to China, and stop importing Chinese shrimps until this country can improve its measures in ensuring food safety of aquatic products.

On Saturday, September 1st, 2007, Taiwan has just stopped importing frozen shrimps from China after discovering that there was a cancer- caused antibiotic residue in shrimp consignments. After detecting nitrofuran residues in the five consignments, Department of Health of Taiwan (DOH) has banned importing frozen shrimps from China. The Department gave an order to return these infected consignments to China, and stop importing Chinese shrimps until this country can improve its measures in ensuring food safety of aquatic products.

Taiwan prohibits importing shrimps directly from China yet traders still do business indirectly through the 3rd party, Hong Kong.

In the first six months of 2007, Taiwan has imported 2,500 tons of frozen shrimps from China.

Nitrofuran is a medicine having effective result on lots of viruses so that farmers widely use it in shrimp hatching, aquaculture and cattle rearing.

It was also in 2006 that Taiwan forbade importing crabs from China after detecting nitrofuran in the consignments.
