According to Mr. Freddy Numberi, Minister of Marine and Fishing, Indonesia is now seeking support from the United Kingdom to boost their seafood export into EU market.
The bilateral cooperation under Seafood trading corridor between Indonesia and UK includes developing quality verification system in 2 fishing port of Muara Baru (Jakarta) and Humberside (UK).

Recently, many export markets including EU have abandoned Indonesia-sourced seafood due to low quality of these products. In addition, Indonesia was involved in a dispute with China over antibiotics residues in their seafood exports.

Indonesia and UK are under negotiation on bilateral trade and seeking for opportunities to boost Indonesia seafood export to EU market. Mr Freddy said that UK would be a very important gate to penetrate in huge EU market in 2008.

Besides holding talks with UK, Indonesia has reached similar cooperation agreement with the Netherlands. However, this country needs to invest at least $856,000 to upgrade the facilities of Muara Baru port to ensure quality standard.
