Frequently Asked Questions - Safeguard measures
Safeguard measures normally consist of a tariff duty or a quantitative restriction on imports.
The request for the application of safeguard measures is restricted to Member States. The Commission may also initiate, on its own initiative, an investigation on the need of safeguard measures.
Generally speaking, safeguard measures may be applied when a product is imported in such increased quantities and under such conditions as to cause or threaten to cause serious injury to Community producers of the like or directly competitive product, provided that it is in the Community's interest to apply any such measures.
