China announced on Friday that it will impose temporary anti-dumping measures on imports of Brazilian chicken meat.

Chinese importers of Brazilian chicken will have to pay deposits of 18.8% to 38.4% of the value of their purchases as of 9 June, the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) said in a statement released in Beijing.

The measures cover products supplied by the main Brazilian exporters JBS and BRF.

A preliminary MOFCOM ruling finds that Chinese producers were “substantially harmed” by Brazil’s shipments between 2013 and 2016, when China provided more than half of Chinese poultry imports.

BRF, the world’s largest poultry exporter, said last month that rising grain prices and barriers to trade in major markets had frustrated efforts to get the company back to profit.

A Brazilian industry source said the Ministry of Commerce proposed further negotiations with exporters, including the possibility of establishing a minimum price for exports to China.
