According to The Wall Streets Journal on 9th July, the effort made by American coffee industry for the purpose of implementing the import security measures could raise the pressure on the coffee farmers and Asian coffee importer including Vietnam as well as obstruct the development of high quality coffee in this region .

Currently, besides the requirement on certificate of customs regulation obeisance and declaration of source of supply, exporters have to provide information to easily find out the origin of coffee. Due to this process, export cost would increase at least by 1 %, from USD 10 to USD 15 per ton of coffee.

This is also the time that Asian coffee exporters are trying to find out the way to develop high quality coffee that increase incomes of coffee farmers and meet the increasing demand on this product.

Though the nature of relationship between Customs and anti-terrorism movement is voluntary , exporter said that in fact it would soon become compulsory. The support of major coffee importers as Starbuck Corp, American Coffee Corp and Rothfos Corp could bring the power for food security initiative launched by United State Coffee Association last month.

The impact of changes could be seen forthwith. As Ramesh Rajah, Chairman of Indian coffee exporter Committee, Indian Coffee exported to America would decrease by 10% in the coming year when new regulations come into effect. Coffee exported from India to America is mainly Arabica one with high quality and grown in small farms.

Approximately, half of Arabica coffee of Indonesia is sold to Starbuck while 10% of Vietnam coffee output is exported to America. With new regulation, this will be adversely affected.
